What is an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician?

What does an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician do?
As an AEMT, graduates will be responsible for assessing and triaging non-urgent, urgent, and emergent requests for medical care. They will apply basic and focused advanced knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation.
What will I learn?
Students in the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certificate program will learn advanced patient assessment techniques, airway management, including the use of advanced airway devices, intravenous (IV) therapy initiation and maintenance, administration of certain emergency medications and management of various medical and trauma emergencies.
How Do I Get Certified As An Advanced Emergency Medical Technician After Graduation?
Graduates of Pima Medical Institute’s Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program are eligible to apply to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam and apply for state AEMT certification.

What is the difference between an EMT and an AEMT?
While EMTs provide foundational basic life support (BLS), AEMTs are trained in intermediate life support (ILS), which includes invasive procedures such as IV insertion, advanced airway placement, and administering specific emergency medications.
Do I need to be a certified EMT before taking the AEMT program?
Yes. Applicants must hold a current, unencumbered EMT certification/license prior to enrolling in the Advanced EMT program.

State Licensure Determination Disclosure
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program is offered via on-ground. The program is available to residents of Nevada and meets applicable licensure requirements in that state. Prospective students and enrolled students should understand that moving out of the state in which they enrolled may adversely impact a student’s ability to complete the program. If a student is planning to relocate outside of their state of enrollment he or she is required to discuss this with the Student Services Coordinator and/or Program Director.
After licensure is obtained in the state (NV), transfer of licensure may be available via state reciprocity compacts. Prospective students and current students are strongly encouraged to contact the state professional licensing board or similar regulatory body in the state(s) where they plan to work to determine requirements before enrolling in a program.
